Overstrand Traning Institute
OTI is our trade name as we are officially registered as a section 21 non-profit organization in 2005 as Overstrand Skills Training Network (OSTN) to meet the
skills gap in the Overstrand. By June 2006 we secured 100 square metres of operating space in the industrial area of Hermanus. Here we offered courses in basic
computer, basic cooking, and restaurant service along with our life skills, homework assistance and student advisory.
Our office was a storage cupboard and another cupboard served as the kitchen with two training areas with four directors. OTI is developed with our graduates who
remain with us and form the energetic OTI family. By 2009 just two of the original directors remain with 6 new directors coming on board in September 2009 with
three advisors. We will have profiles and pictures in our updated website in May 2010. For now we are proud to have survived and grown over the last four years.
By March 2007 we were blessed to become part of the construction team that built the Enlighten Centre where we are now tenants operating in 500 square metres of
space. In 2007 OTI recruited our first full class of 18 trainees in construction who took part in all areas of the construction of the Enlighten Centre qualifying
in an innovative building system of Lite Steel. At this time the building is the only double storey building in the Western Cape of South Africa. OTI is eternally
grateful to the Enlighten Education Trust for the funding secured to train 300 people from the start of our journey to 2009. This support is an important aspect of
our development and the achievement of 1049 certificates by 592 people by November 2009.
Courses are offered in four areas along with our training partners: business with Boland College, construction with various providers, Chef Assistant with Warwicks
Chef School, Basic Computer with the Khanya Project of the Western Cape Education Department. These skills training courses are supported by a unique blend of
leadership sessions through InFynnite Solutions and our own Servol programme experience. Our roots lie in our Servol experience.
Servol is a non-profit organisation based in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean operating for the past 40 years. Servol is recognized by UNESCO and has been
awarded a Nobel Alternative Award for Right Livelihood. Two of our directors and a staff member have been through the Servol experience. For more information on
Servol please see their website www.servoltt.com . Our outreach and leadership programme are based on this special experience. Here in South Africa our main
focus in with the ‘previously disadvantaged’ communities. Our operations are guided by our Servol experience and the network model of ‘life centres’.
